Canadian
alternative rock band Barenaked Ladies formed
in 1988 in Scarborough, Ontario, a suburb
of Toronto. The band's first release was
the 1991 independent Yellow Tape, the first
indie release to achieve platinum status
in Canada. The band's first album, Gordon,
released in 1992, was a smash hit in Canada
and included some of the band's most well-known
songs, including Be My Yoko Ono, If I Had
$1,000,000 and Brian Wilson.

One of music's most interesting and prolific
artists, Steve Miller has been making records
of nearly every genre since 1968. In the
course of 20 years at Capitol, Miller and
a varying cast of musicians, always billed
as the Steve Miller Band, would produce
music that was alternately psychedelic,
bluesy, R&B-inspired, country-tinged,
gorgeously poppy, discofied, highly synthetic,
and straight-out jazzy. Even more remarkable
than that variety was his ability to perform
skillfully in those modes without submerging
the core of his sound or his own personality.

Falling
between the energetic pop/rock of mod revival
and the psychedelic experimentations of
Traffic, Ocean Colour Scene came to be one
of the leading bands of the traditionalist,
post-Oasis British rock of the mid-'90s.
Although they had formed in the late '80s
and had several hits during the height of
Madchester in the early '90s, the band didn't
earn a large following until 1996, when
their second album, Moseley Shoals, became
a multi-platinum success story in the U.K.
Their ascent was greatly aided by Paul Weller
and Oasis' Noel Gallagher, who both publicly
praised Ocean Colour Scene for keeping the
flame of real rock & roll burning during
the '90s. And, according to one specific
definition, they were right, since Ocean
Colour Scene was nothing if not rock &
roll traditionalists, drawing heavily from
British Invasion pop, psychedelia, soul,
R&B, and blues-rock to create a reverential
homage to classic rock. Their devotion to
trad rock may have earned them decidedly
mixed reviews, but that was the very thing
that earned them a sizable following.

Emerging
from the depths of Bakersfield, California
with a sound unlike any other in 1994, Korn
have been able to cement themselves as one
of the most important bands in rock n' roll
history. The band may have changed members
with Brian 'Head' Welch and David Silveria
departing in 2005 and 2006 respectively,
but Jonathan, Munky, Fieldy and Ray capture
the feeling that was there in the beginning.

Motörhead
can be credited with inventing the speed
metal sub genre of rock music in the late
1970s. Formed around former Hawkwind band
member Lemmy (the only member of the group
to have remained throughout their career),
Motörhead were originally to be called
Bastard, but Lemmy changed the name to Motörhead
in honour of the last song he wrote for
Hawkwind. «

The
90s witnessed The Saw Doctors emerge as
the most successful Irish rock band since

bands like the Beatles and the Byrds and
the working-class imagery of Bruce Springsteen

One
of rock music's most recognizable names
- are heading back out on the road. The
fiery Dublin band exploded onto the scene
with a fresh sound, look and attitude with
classic tracks such as 'Jailbreak' and 'The
Boys Are Back In Town'. Twenty-four years
have passed since founding member Phil Lynott
passed away, but a new lineup has formed
to take Lizzy's music to a whole new generation
of music fans. The band will be led by alumni
Scott Gorham, Brian Downey and Darren Wharton
(all of whom played in Thin Lizzy with Phil
Lynott) and will also include Def Leppards
Viv Campbell (guitar), Bassist Marco Mendoza
(Whitesnake, Ted Nugent) and The Almighty's
Ricky Warwick on vocals and guitar.

East
Londoner Ben Drew could well be the most
exciting MC this city has produced. He's
as likely to be playing indie venues or
folk clubs as he is hip hop jams or raves
or R&B gigs. He can spit rhymes and
hold his own against any MC or rapper, but
can then suddenly switch into a delicate,
sweet white soul croon that would shame
any boyband member. He accompanies himself
on an acoustic guitar, playing in a curiously
folksy, fingerpicking style. But the killer
punch is the lyrics - bleak, cinematic,
X-rated urban poetry laced with a mordant
wit and a strong dose of pathos. Tickets
go on sale from Friday 9th July 2010 at
9am. «
