One of the last artists to build a true word-of-mouth following before widespread streaming, The Guardian wrote, "Rice's personality and deft songwriting hoist him above the mass of bedsit mumblers... gorgeous and understated, never too introverted to include a lovely melody."

The Irish folk rock singer went from recording at home, initially self-releasing his material, and busking around Europe to becoming a household name with millions of sales and hits "Cannonball", "The Blower's Daughter" and "9 Crimes" despite only releasing three studio albums in 20 years, his last in 2014.
