Ed Caesar & The Epic of Everest
A fascinating evening about Mount Everest.
Featuring author Ed Caesar talking about an adventurer and his amazing attempt to climb Everest in 1934. We will then be screening a restoration of the incredible 1924 film, The Epic of Everest.
Ed Caesar is an award-winning author and a contributing writer to The New Yorker.
He has reported from a wide range of countries, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kosovo, Russia, and Iran. He was once asked by Kevin Costner whether he was “anxious to die”.
Caesar’s first book, Two Hours, about the world’s greatest distance runners and their quest to run the fastest ever marathon, was published in 2015. The Spectator said the book was a kind of “Hoop Dreams for runners” and in 2016, won a British Sports Book Award.
Caesar’s second book, The Moth and the Mountain, is about the war veteran, mystic, and adventurer Maurice Wilson, who attempted to climb Everest in 1934.
The Epic of Everest
The third attempt to climb Everest culminated in the deaths of two of the finest climbers of their generation, George Mallory and Andrew Irvine, and sparked an on-going debate over whether or not they did indeed reach the summit.
Filming in brutally harsh conditions with a hand-cranked camera, Captain John Noel captured images of breathtaking beauty and considerable historic significance. The film, from 1924, is also among the earliest filmed records of life in Tibet and we are screening the latest restoration from the British Film Institute.
