Foodie Group: Polish Poppy Seed Cakes

Foodie Group: Polish Poppy Seed Cakes
Would you like to become a Museum Foodie? Our Foodie Group meet monthly to discuss, cook and eat food inspired by stories from our collection, artists and events we programme, as well as our own members heritage?s and backgrounds. Our workshops are informal, chatty and a chance to meet new people, as well as learn about new recipes and cooking traditions. In this month?s session, we?ll be baking Polish poppy seed cakes ? makowiec. Traditionally eaten at Christmas and Easter, this cake consists of a yeasted pastry and a layer or sweet poppy seed mixture rolled together to form a log. It was a specially requested recipe by our regular attendee Ollie, who is of Polish heritage. Poppy seeds are also traditionally eaten in the form of hamantaschen during the Jewish festival of Purim, which takes place this month on 13th ? 14th March. We?ll explore stories in our collection relating to this joyous festival as our cakes bake. Polish poppy seed cake WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW This activity is designed for anyone aged 18 or over.
