Lingua Franca (15) + Jasmine Gardosi
A screening of Isabel Sandoval's Lingua Franca accompanied by a spoken word performance from Jasmine Gardosi, the current Birmingham Poet Laureate. She is a multiple slam champion, beatboxer and winner of the Out-Spoken Prize for Poetry. Her work explores identity, LGBTQ+ issues and mental health.
The incredible work of US-based Filipina filmmaker and actress Isabel Sandoval, Lingua Franca follows Olivia, an undocumented, transgender, Filipina caregiver for an elderly Russian-Jewish woman, Olga, in New York. In the Trump era of heightened hostility, fear and uncertainty, Olivia’s options for securing legal status in the US are diminished.
