Marnie (15)
Haunted by childhood trauma, Marnie Edgar lives a troubled life marked by moments of criminality, hysteria and a desperate search for safety.
After being caught stealing by her latest employer, Marnie embarks on a fraught relationship with Mark Rutland, the head of the company and a wealthy widower. Mark takes an intense interest in Marnie?s unusual behaviour and her mysterious past, but their relationship and Mark?s scrutiny causes cracks to form in Marnie?s fragile reality.
Divisive on its initial release, Marnie remains a controversial entry in Hitchcock?s filmography, but one that has certainly grown in stature in subsequent years. A fever dream distillation of many of Hitchcock?s enduring preoccupations ? his emphatic use of colour, blonde heroines, and strained maternal relationships to name a few ? it is now perhaps regarded as the filmmaker?s last truly great work.?
