Ms. Lauryn Hill & The Fugees

Ms. Lauryn Hill & The Fugees

Having scored the best-selling rap record in the world in 1996, with "The Score", New Jersey trio the Fugees are ultra-cool but warrior in the soul, firm but never aggressive, and raised by Lauryn Hill's delicious voice.

Succeeding in the dream connection of rap and reggae, by combining root flavours and hip-hop minimalism, their mature and greyful songs see Wyclef Jean, Pras Michel and Lauryn Hill create an unprecedented rap, popular and fragrant Haitian way.

Because the patronymic of the group comes directly from the experience of refugees lived by the Haitian community (from which Wyclef and Pras both come from) - they even occasionally rapped in Haitian Creole.

They were catapulted to the top of the hit-parades by the grace of the rap-gospel adaptation of Lori Lieberman's 1971 standard "Killing Me Softly", which was popularised in 1973 by Roberta Flack, together with platinum-selling hits "Ready or Not", "Fu-Gee-La", "Rumble in the Jungle" a cover of Bob Marley's "No Woman No Cry" and an uncredited guest appearance on Simply Red's "Angel".

Wyclef would go on to have a successful solo career, including collaborating with Queen, Pras would score the hit "Ghetto Supastar (That Is What You Are)", while Lauryn's 1998 debut solo album "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" was met with widespread critical acclaim and spawned the hits "Doo Wop (That Thing)", "Ex-Factor", and "Everything Is Everything".
