The Stockport Music Story In Conversation with Peter Tattersall

The founder of the iconic Strawberry Recording Studios in Stockport talks to Dr Peter Wadsworth about creating 'the Abbey Road of the North'.

This is a rare opportunity to be part of the audience in an intimate chat between Peter Tattersall, founder of Strawberry Recording Studios and Dr Peter Wadsworth, the curator of the Strawberry Studios archive. Over the last few years they have been writing a book together called 'Strawberry Studios Forever' that will be published later this year, to tell Peter Tattersall's fascinating life story.

When he founded Inter-City Studios in 1967 above the Nield & Hardy music store on Great Underbank, Peter Tattersall could hardly realise what an impact he was going to have on popular music. Primarily, he created so many new and exciting opportunities for north-west groups because, at the time, most studios were based in London and musicians had to make a long and expensive journey to the capital just to make a recording.

Peter's friend, Eric Stewart, lead singer and guitarist with The Mindbenders, also recognised what a great business opportunity this was and made a considerable investment into what would become Strawberry Recording Studios later joined by songwriter Graham Gouldman.

Over the years Peter Tattersall has achieved so much in his music career - he's worked with a wealth of international artists including 10cc, Paul McCartney and Neil Sedaka, knocked John Lennon off the no.1 spot with St Winifred's School Choir as well as giving opportunities for up and coming bands to use the studio which resulted in much of Manchester's groundbreaking music being produced here in Stockport at Strawberry.

10cc would certainly not have existed without Strawberry Studios as this was the place where all four members honed their craft in songwriting, musicianship and production working with other artists before joining forces and creating some of the most innovative music in the world.
