University of Manchester Jazz Ensemble
Led by Alexander Gagatsis, the Music Department’s jazz ensemble was established in October 2019.
It is one of the department’s many assessed ensembles that complement the larger orchestras operating under the umbrella of Manchester University Music Society (MUMS).
The band made its public debut at Manchester’s iconic venue, Band on the Wall, in December 2019.
The musicians are second-year music students, that play a range of instruments.
Since its inception, the main focus of the group has been on the interaction between jazz and music from Latin America.
It also ties with African ancestry, and this is broadly understood as Afro-Latin Jazz. This concert features arrangements of popular songs from the Great American songbook, funk, soul, blues, as well as some original compositions by students.
