Toots and The Maytals Featuring Leba Hibbert

Toots and The Maytals Featuring Leba Hibbert

Jamaican ska and rocksteady legends The Maytals, were not only key figures in popularising reggae music with their frontman Toots Hibbert, who died in 2020, considered a reggae pioneer on par with Bob Marley, but they also coined the name of the genre with their 1968 single "Do the Reggay."

His soulful vocal style was compared to Otis Redding, and led him to be named by Rolling Stone as one of the 100 Greatest Singers.

In July 2021 the family of Toots Hibbert issued a cease and desist letter to the remaining members of The Maytals Band prohibiting them from performing under the name "The Maytals" (the name the band has been performing under for over 50 years).

The band members who were part of the original lineup in 1972 and those who joined in years between 1972-2022 are now referred to as "former members of The Maytals Band" while Frederick "Toots" Hibbert's daughter Leba Hibbert continues his legacy.
